GUIDE SPECIFICATION FOR COLD WEATHER-BELOW WATER-BOLT-BAR PLACEMENT USING PRO-POXY 300 FAST

When using epoxy resins at 40°F. in water, special attention must be paid to job site conditions. This is crucial when the bolt installation is below water as we are usually limited in producing an artificial zone warmer than the ambient temperature.

With these conditions in mind you may consider the following procedures:

1. Drill and clean hole to proper size. A general rule of thumb if hole size is not specified is to drill the hole 1/8” larger in diameter than the bolt and 10 times the bolt diameter in depth. This will apply to substrates of 3000 psi and up while drilling 15 times the diameter in depth for those lower than 3000 psi.

2. Pre-condition cartridges to a minimum of 75°F. before use. Keep warm until  used.

3. Afford some type of protection to contain heat in cartridges when placed in application gun and lowered into the water.

4. Make sure bolts are clean and oil free. Pre-heat bolts. The colder the water the warmer the bolt. Once heated, place in container filled with hot water and lower to diver.

5. Place resin and bolt in normal manner.
A. Pump resin into pre-drilled hole. Inject from the bottom of the hole to the  top.
B. Insert bolt with a slow, clock-wise, spinning action to ensure proper seating.
C. Remove excess resin that may be forced out. If resin does not totally fill hole after bolt is set, remove bolt and gun in additional resin.

LET CURE FOR NECESSARY TIME AS DETERMINED BY ACTUAL FIELD TEST. THIS IS CRITICAL AS EACH PROJECT IS UNIQUE.

A typical field test could include the use of a broken piece of concrete with holes drilled the same size as those on the project.

Pre-condition concrete below water for 24 hours prior to test. When ready to test, simulate actual procedure to be used. Your sample may be brought to just below surface so divers will not be needed. A number of bolts should be set to allow for multiple testing if necessary. If in question or if you are looking for a simple indicator, simply apply a thin layer, approx. 1/16”, of resin below quiet water surface and monitor to see when the resin sets.
